ITIN for YouTube and AdSense creators: what Google withholds, what the W-8BEN does, and where the ITIN fits

Google's rule is public: submit tax info or lose up to 24 percent of worldwide earnings; with tax info, 0 to 30 percent of US-viewer earnings depending on your treaty. The ITIN is one way to complete that picture, and the only way into the US bank and credit base a creator business ends up needing.

A non-US YouTube creator does not need an ITIN to be paid by Google. AdSense for YouTube collects tax info on a Form W-8BEN; Google says that without it up to 24 percent of total worldwide earnings may be deducted, and with it the withholding rate on earnings from US viewers is between 0 and 30 percent depending on the creator's country and treaty. A treaty claim needs a tax identification number, which can be the creator's own country's number. The ITIN is the US number a creator uses when their country issues none, when they file a US return, and above all to be identified by the US banks and card issuers a creator business grows into.

Does a YouTube creator need an ITIN?

Not to get paid, and not to claim a treaty rate if your own country issues a tax number. Google's US tax requirements for YouTube earnings page, read September 14, 2026, sets out the rule: US tax law requires Google to deduct taxes from your YouTube earnings from US viewers where applicable; if you do not submit tax info, Google may be required to deduct up to 24 percent of your total earnings worldwide; if you do, the rate on US-viewer earnings is between 0 and 30 percent depending on whether your country has a tax treaty with the United States. The tax info is a W-8BEN in AdSense, and a treaty claim on it needs a tax identification number, yours or a US one.

So the ITIN is optional for AdSense in most countries and the honest pages say so. Where it becomes the right move is described below.

When does the ITIN help a creator?

  • Your country does not issue a tax identification number for individuals, so the treaty claim has nothing to hold on to. Amazon's KDP tax page says the same for its royalties: apply for a US TIN in that case.
  • You file a US return, because your activity or your adviser says so. The W-7 is filed with it.
  • You want the US bank account, the cards and the credit profile that a media business with US advertisers, US sponsors and US spend grows into. Those identify you by the ITIN.

The last point is the one that matters for most creators we speak to. AdSense pays into a bank account in your country; that is fine at $2,000 a month. At $20,000 a month, with US brand deals, US contractors, US software and US travel, the business needs a US account that US companies can pay without friction and cards that give something back on every dollar. The number the bank and the issuer identify you by is the ITIN.

Sponsorships, merch and brand deals

Google's withholding covers AdSense earnings. A US sponsor paying you directly is a separate payer with its own paperwork: it will ask for a W-8BEN and a taxpayer number to report the payment under, and some sponsors will not onboard a non-US payee without one. Merch platforms that pay royalties apply the same 30 percent default logic Amazon KDP describes. Each new US payer is another reason the number pays for itself, and another form your adviser should see before you sign it.

Payouts, currency and the account Google pays into

AdSense pays into a bank account in your name in a supported country, in local currency or in US dollars where the bank accepts them. Nothing in that step needs an ITIN. What creators notice as the channel grows is the cost of the conversion and the friction of being paid by US companies into a non-US account, which is a banking question rather than a Google one, and the reason a US account becomes worth the trip once the numbers justify it.

How a creator gets an ITIN

Form W-7 with a valid passport, filed with the return that needs the number or under one of the five exceptions in the instructions. A creator with US-source income subject to withholding may fit Exception 1 with an original letter from the withholding agent; which route fits is checked before anything is filed. The IRS allows 7 weeks, 9 to 11 in the January 15 to April 30 peak or from abroad, and charges nothing. Through a Certifying Acceptance Agent the passport is verified in a live video session and certified, so it never travels. Our fee is $399, refundable until we file.

What happens after the number

Keep AdSense current: check the tax info each year and resubmit when Google asks. Then build the base the channel deserves: company paperwork a bank accepts, accounts opened in person in Miami, the first card, the ladder. The order guide shows the sequence and the credit card guide shows where it leads. Google's rules on withholding stay Google's; the banks' decisions stay the banks'. The number makes both conversations possible.

Questions founders ask

No. AdSense collects a W-8BEN, and a treaty claim can use your own country's tax number. Google's rates are 0 to 30 percent on US-viewer earnings with tax info, and up to 24 percent of worldwide earnings without it (YouTube Help, September 2026).

Next step: get your ITIN

Done-for-you ITIN. $399, once.

You complete one form. We prepare the W-7, certify your passport copy and file it. You never deal with the IRS yourself.

Prepared and certified through an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent, so your original passport is never mailed to the IRS.
