Can you get a US credit card with an ITIN? Yes, and here is how it actually happens

Issuers accept the ITIN in place of an SSN. That is the easy part. The card that gets approved is the one applied for in the right order, with a bank relationship and a file behind it.

Yes. US card issuers can accept an ITIN in place of a Social Security Number on an application; Capital One's own guide says an ITIN may be used in place of an SSN for some banking and credit applications and lists cards it may issue on one. What decides the approval is not the number but what sits behind it: a US bank account opened in person, a history the bureaus can file under the ITIN, and applications made in an order that builds from a first card to the premium ones. Our clients went from a first card with a $500 limit to Chase Sapphire Reserve and Amex that way.

Do card issuers accept an ITIN?

Some do, and one of them says so in its own words. Capital One's guide to getting a credit card with an ITIN, published April 30, 2026, says you might be able to use an ITIN in place of an SSN for some banking and credit applications, describes applying in the same way you would with an SSN, and lists its own cards a person may be able to get with one, including an unsecured Platinum card for people with no credit history. Other issuers do not publish a policy in words; their applications have a field for an SSN or ITIN, and the file behind the number decides.

The legal footing is the same as at the bank: the federal customer identification rule, 31 CFR 1020.220, lets an institution identify a non-US person by taxpayer number, passport number or another government document. The ITIN is the taxpayer number an issuer can file your history under.

Why the number is not the hard part

The ITIN gets you into the room. It does not fill the room. An issuer approving a card looks for a US credit file, income it can verify, a bank relationship it can see, and an address and history that hold together. A brand new ITIN has an empty file behind it, and an application made from abroad with a fintech statement and no US account tends to end in a decline that then sits on the empty file.

That is why every card story on this site starts at a bank branch, not at an issuer's website. The account opened in person gives the issuer something to see; the first card, often modest, gives the bureaus something to report; the reports become a score; the score and the relationship open the cards people actually want.

Which cards can you get with an ITIN?

In practice, the same range as anyone else, in the same order. Secured and starter cards when the file is empty; the issuers' standard cards once a few months of on-time reporting exist; the premium travel and business cards once the file, the income and the relationship support them. Capital One publishes its ITIN-friendly list; Chase and American Express decided Kevin's, Richard's and Devan's cards on their files. No issuer approves a card because of the number, and none should be expected to.

Business cards and the company

A business card is issued to the company on the strength of the owner. The application asks for the company's EIN and the owner's SSN or ITIN, and the issuer pulls the owner's personal file. That is the second reason the ITIN matters for a founder: without it there is no owner file to pull, and the company's EIN alone does not carry a business card application. The ITIN vs SSN vs EIN guide covers the three numbers.

What the ITIN does not do

  • It does not import your foreign credit history. US bureaus file US accounts; the score starts when those are reported.
  • It does not oblige any issuer. Approvals, limits and points are the issuer's decision, and our guarantee on the full service covers the card approval only, as set out in the client agreement.
  • It does not replace the bank account. The account opened in person is what the first issuer sees.

How to get the number, then the card

Form W-7 with a valid passport, filed with the return that needs it or under an exception; the IRS allows 7 weeks, 9 to 11 in peak season or from abroad, and charges nothing. Through a Certifying Acceptance Agent the passport is verified in a live video session and certified, so nothing is mailed. Our fee is $399, refundable until we file. Then the company paperwork, the accounts in Miami, the first card, the ladder. The credit card guide explains the twelve months that follow the number.

Yes. Issuers can accept an ITIN in place of an SSN; Capital One says so on its own site and lists cards it may issue on one. Approval still depends on the file, the income and the bank relationship behind the number.
