How non-US residents open a real US bank account

Most non-US founders have already opened something: a fintech account in twenty minutes, an online business account, a card that spends in dollars. Then they try to build credit on it and discover it was never a bank. This guide explains what a real US bank account for a non-US resident takes, and why the relationship is the product.

A fintech account is not a bank account

A fintech moves money. It does not build credit and it does not give you a banker. It can be opened in twenty minutes and it can be closed in less than twenty minutes, usually by an automated review you never speak to. Nothing in it is underwriting you.

A real US bank account sits at an institution that also issues credit: Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Truist, Capital One. That is where a relationship banker exists, where a private-client conversation can happen, and where the account history becomes part of a file someone will later underwrite.

Why it happens in person

American banks verify a non-resident in person. The relationship banking and the top-tier cards happen in a branch, with a banker, with your documents on the desk. That is the one step that cannot be done from a laptop, and it is the reason our process is built around one trip to Miami. You do not move to the US. You come once, and you leave with the relationships.

What the banker needs to see

  • Your identity in the US system: the ITIN, filed and issued.
  • A US company the bank can read in one look: formed in the right state, with its EIN and operating documents.
  • A real US business address. An address shared with a thousand other entrepreneurs is not a compliant address, and bankers know the ones on the lists.
  • Documentation: your entry record and the papers banks ask for before a private-client conversation, prepared before you fly.
  • Local identification, sorted on the trip, so you are not putting only a foreign passport in front of a banker.
  • Liquidity. A relationship banker does not take a meeting for a two-thousand-dollar account. Liquidity gets you the room; the profile and the case get you the approval. The money goes into your own checking account and stays yours.

The introduction is the work

A cold walk-in is a form and a wait. What changes the outcome is a banker who has seen your file before you sit down. We introduce clients to relationship bankers we already know about a month before they fly, so the conversation in the branch is a continuation, not an application.

One of our clients, a GTM agency co-founder from Cyprus, put it this way: "Chase, you went there with me, you knew the banker… made me a private client." That is what an introduction does.

The banking day

Day one is our office and local identification. Day two is the bankers we introduced you to: personal and business accounts across multiple institutions, and private-client status where the deposit supports it. Day three is final confirmations. Jack, an AI consultancy founder from Australia, described his second day simply: "Today I spent six, seven hours in banks, but now I have three banking relationships with three of the most powerful institutions in the world."

The e-commerce founder from Latvia arrived with everything already prepared: "I just came to the bank, I had all the documents, and she's saying, 'You are prepared.'" That is the point of the checklist and the packet. The trip is the peak, not the work.

What comes after the account

The account is layer four of five. On top of it sits the credit profile, built in the right order, and then the card applications, sequenced bank by bank so nothing is submitted too early. Opening accounts at several banks in one day is what makes that sequence possible.

This guide describes how the US system works for non-US founders and how we build within it. It is not tax, legal or immigration advice; your CPA or attorney answers those questions for your situation.

Questions founders ask

Not the kind that builds credit and comes with a banker. Fintech accounts open remotely, and they are useful for moving money, but they are not banks and they do not underwrite you. The relationship accounts we open are opened in person, in Miami, on one trip.
